About Wherry Yacht Charter

Wherry Yacht Charter is a charitable trust caring for five of the last eight wherries in existence, and we invite visitors to join us for both day sailings and free on-board viewings on given days throughout the season. Dates, details and prices are listed individually on our website.Step aboard a historic wherry yacht for a glimpse of the way early holidaymakers experienced the Norfolk Broads. With their sleek white hull, gleaming varnish, cosy cabins and spacious counter stern they point to the refined and stylish origins of holidays afloat. Sail with us and for sure the distinctive clank of the winch and the sight of the huge sail being raised by the crew will create lasting memories of your trip. Enjoy refreshments on board as you slip quietly through the tranquil landscape of Britain’s only wetland national park, and keep your eyes open for wildlife such as otters, kingfishers and marsh harriers. On both sailings and viewings our enthusiastic volunteers will be happy to tell you more of these boats’ history and operation, and about our work in keeping them sailing for all to enjoy. Our sailing season is from May to September. You can book individual places on one of the many scheduled sails directly from our website. We offer a variety of experiences to meet all preferences, including some very special themed excursions such as Nature sails, Cake & Sails, Fish and Chip suppers, even Wine or Gin tasting on our wherries in collaboration with the best of local Norfolk vineyards and distilleries. What’s more, you can even join a unique sail with the Bishop of Norwich as he travels by wherry to lead his annual open-air service at the ruins of St Benet’s Abbey! For larger groups you may prefer the exclusivity of a private charter of a single day or longer. Day charters are particularly popular for special celebrations including birthdays, wedding anniversaries and corporate hospitality events. To make a charter enquiry or a booking simply email bookings@wherryyachtcharter.org. Please enquire as far in advance of your preferred date/s as possible – as our skippers and crew are all volunteers, early notice of your dates makes it much more likely that we can accommodate you and your party. Charter bookings start and end at our base in Wroxham. All our vessels carry up to 12 passengers on a day sailing, and 10 on overnight charters (numbers include children). We offer our wherries on a self-catering basis and facilities include a fully-equipped galley with hob, oven and fridge, a toilet, washbasins and a shower (White Moth only). Each saloon provides both daytime living space and four berths, and even feature a traditional yacht piano available for your use and enjoyment. For overnight charters we simply ask that you bring your own sleeping bags or duvets, sheets, pillows and towels. Skipper accommodation is entirely separate from the passenger area of the wherry yacht to ensure your exclusive enjoyment into the evening. However long you sail with us an experienced skipper is always provided, and scheduled sails and day charters include additional crew to enable you to fully relax and enjoy the best of the Norfolk Broads. Our fleet currently comprises three Wherry Yachts: Olive (1909), Norada (1912) and White Moth (1915), and two Pleasure Wherries: Hathor (1905) and Ardea (1927). Full details of the yachts can be found on the website including their layout.Hathor, a very unique pleasure wherry with an incredible Egyptian themed interior design, originally commissioned by members of the Colman family is often found moored during the sailing season at How Hill near Ludham. Our volunteers are often on hand to facilitate viewings and to share their knowledge and passion for Hathor and all our wherries. We don’t charge for viewings at How Hill, however donations to help support the ongoing maintenance are always greatly appreciated.Ardea, is predominantly reserved for corporate and bespoke charters. Please review our website and do contact us as we will gladly guide you to the most suitable wherry and experience that meets your requirements.
