Mere + Betjeman

Diss

Diss is a lovely market town focused around a historic mere in Norfolk, England, and is on the Inter City main line between London and Norwich.

The town, in the River Waveney Valley, is a lively mix of independent shops, pubs and cafes with a 14th century church and an 1850s Corn Hall recently refurbished as an excellent theatre, event and cinema space.

Sir John Betjeman wrote: ‘Dear Mary, Yes, it will be bliss, To go with you by train to Diss.’

Diss is an Anglo-Saxon word for ditch or embankment.

Nearby is the 100th Bomb Group Museum at Thorpe Abbotts.
