About Frame Loom Weaving Workshop

A Weaving Workshop with Helena Powell

Frame Loom Weaving Workshop

A Textile Workshop with Helena Powell Date: Thursday 23 July 2026 Time: 10:00–3:00pm Price: £65 per person

Discover the fundamentals of frame loom weaving in this hands-on workshop led by textile artist Helena Powell. Guided through the process of warping a loom and building woven surfaces, participants will explore texture, composition and rhythm using a rich selection of materials, including reclaimed textile edges, deadstock yarns and hand-spun fibres, with a particular focus on hand-spun silk and remnants sourced from the Sudbury Silk Mill.

With a focus on material exploration and mindful making, the session encourages a slower, more intuitive approach to textile practice. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience, the workshop offers an opportunity to experiment freely while developing core weaving techniques.

Participants will create their own woven piece to take home. There is also the option to purchase the frame loom used during the workshop, along with additional materials, for £20 — ideal for those who wish to continue weaving beyond the session.

Suitable for: Beginners, artists, designers and anyone interested in textile processes

You will leave with: – A completed woven sample – An understanding of basic frame loom techniques – Confidence to continue weaving independently

Refreshments: Tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits provided. Please bring a packed lunch.

What to wear: Comfortable clothing suitable for working with fibres

Access: Please note this workshop takes place in the upper gallery, which is not wheelchair accessible. We apologise for any inconvenience.

As Summer Artist in Residence, Helena Powell will be present throughout July and August, working in the gallery space on a live loom. Using locally woven Sudbury silk, she will develop new pieces in situ, offering visitors a rare opportunity to observe the rhythms and intricacies of hand weaving as they unfold. Informal demonstrations will take place regularly, inviting audiences to engage with the material, process and heritage embedded within Powell’s practice.
